The next months (old)
« on: December 04, 2012, 01:19:46 am »

UPDATE 4 Jan 2013

I did the changes for the cyclemaps at Germany and Nights.
- 15 minutes rounds
- Added uptown (Let's see if this doesn't crash).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE 1 Jan 2013

The Austria server has been powered off.

The new FFA instance is pending :P

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE 22 Dec 2012

I will be doing some of the changes below in the next days.

- The server at Austria will be shutdown. Probably this will happen in the next month, but maybe I will do it in the next couple of days, depending on the policy of cancellation of my provider.
- The FFA server will be moved soon to Kansas. This will happen in the next couple of weeks. I will be running a new instance there, and people can start to play and see how it goes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lots of things are happening, and I have some ideas for the end of the world, that I need to tell you... xD

In order to consolidate the servers running around the world, and to give less tasks for the admins, I have some ideas:
  • Shut down the Austria server: This one is almost abandoned, and it has almost the same latency than the Germany one. Probably this won't be good for ubernoob lol, but most euro people is playing at Germany.
  • Moving the FFA server: This, just to get it together with the dressing room one at Kansas. This isn't completely decided, but is part of getting rid of the network problems at San Jose... (Yes, this one is still hosted there).

And other pending stuff:
  • The bomb server: Sooner or later I will run it u_u Most probably at Kansas, which apparently has been working fine these months.
  • Updating B3 for the Germany server and other locations with B3 < 1.8 xD

And even more remote things in my head:
  • Moving again the Nights server at LA, to Kansas: Apparently this one isn't repopulating like before when I needed to move it, and I am afraid that it can evolve in another empty zone...
  • Start another server at Italy: I have a spare box there, and I love their network. Some european people love the ISP there, because it has nice routing to several countries.
  • Survivor server: Yes, we had one like a year ago or sth. Maybe can be cool to run one of these again?
  • Version 4.2: Apparently most people dislike it, and still is in a patching phase... (buggy like hell? o_O) But if some people like it, maybe one day we will be running one of these :P

And some rumors:
  • Probably my provider at Germany will receive a pricing increase from their upstream provider due to the lack of IPv4 space... So, probably they will:
    a) Ask for more money.
    b) Just kick me out because I have a promotional plan with them instead of a regular one.
    c) Stay as is...
Hopefully the last option, but I will know in the next months.
  • Moving the Kansas server: Yes, how ironic... Well, the idea behind this, is to getting a dedicated server even more powerful instead of the current one, but trying to preserve the IP addresses. At this moment isn't needed, but as I said, this are just ideas for the next months.

That's all I can remember now...
Some comments? :D

Anyone willing to help me out on a simple Siggy project of mine?

From my experience of SR8 servers, quite a few are filled with ragers who call hack on anyone who kills them. Do we want to attract these sorts of people to TLWS and add to the moaners already on the server?

I'm OK with wherever you move the servers.
We do lose half or more of the players every time Algiers rolls into Dressing Room, and since we have a Dressing Room server, do we really need that in the rotation?
Can we replace it with something else?
Also, can we maybe change the rotation on Nights, or even make it random?
And, maybe shorten the time by 5 or 10 minutes. That way, if we don't like a particular map, we know it's only 15 or 20 minutes from cycling, rather than 25minutes.
Oh, and a pony.

@astrowaves what Sr8 server did you play on?
The main ones I've been on are TA sr8 and *sr8 only*. There's always someone teamkilling or using wall when I'm on but it could just be my bad luck.
Also, can we maybe change the rotation on Nights, or even make it random?
And, maybe shorten the time by 5 or 10 minutes. That way, if we don't like a particular map, we know it's only 15 or 20 minutes from cycling, rather than 25minutes.
Oh, and a pony.
Random maps would be fun! What about having low grav on the dressing room map to make it different from the Dressing Room server?

I strongly agree with this.  Many players leave during Dressing Room, including myself.  I would suggest replacing it with Subway (also with a shorter time limit), but Subway isn't very popular either.

And, maybe shorten the time by 5 or 10 minutes. That way, if we don't like a particular map, we know it's only 15 or 20 minutes from cycling, rather than 25 minutes.

I also strongly agree with this.  25 minutes is a long time for TDM.  Somewhere around 15 to 20 minutes is the norm, I think, and I definitely lean towards 15 minutes.

Agreed and agreed. I believe the issue with a longer, more vibrant map cycle was bot support, which is why many maps are still off the list.

I do agree that dressing room is a map that some random mapper made out of boredom. Scratch that...hold on...I do agree that dressing room is a map that some random mapper made out of boredom. Someone bored probably makes better maps if they have that much time to be bored.

Now, back to what I was saying. A new mapper randomly starts doodling and we get dressing room. Pretty good for a doodle, I might add, not so much for gameplay. Subway, on the other hand, offers a much wider scope. It also has bot support. It's easy to camp (Been there, done that, especially when I first started playing), different routes to flank from, blah blah blah. you get the point. I hope.

Yes, I like Subway a lot, and have requested it in the past.  As Mav mentioned it supports bots and is a well designed map.  But I have seen some players complain about it.  Of course, 75% of all Urban Terror players only play so that they can have something to complain about.

Was on Nights earlier. Started with 8 or 9 players (4 bots). By the end of the map, it was 4 bots, me and one other human.
The Red bots got stuck on the ladder in spawn and the Blue bots never even tried to leave spawn.
Nights has pretty much been empty since then.
I think Uptown needs to go.

Ahm, I am confused
Wasn't uptown the map with bot support? http://www.urbanterror.info/forums/topic/6906-running-bots-in-ut4/

And yes, that's why I didn't put uptown in the rotation since the beginning of tlws. The bots just stay there forever.

Edit: After looking at the logs, the servers are crashing with uptown, I've removed it.

FWIW, I do know Subway and Dust 2 work with bots.

I used to provide 3 Aussie bot servers. Uptown was fine in FFA and ok(ish) in TS modes but the bots get badly tangled up in the doors and ladders in spawn areas in other modes TDM included sadly.
