FAQ - Frequently asked questions
« on: January 30, 2011, 01:26:18 am »
Ok, some people ask the same questions every time :P

I think it will be nice to get a FAQ for the forum, and answer other questions more specific.

If you have suggestions, corrections, and new topics to add, please let us know by replying to this post.

Let's start:

About Urban Terror

  • What is Urban Terror?

Urban terror is a FPS game build over the Quake 3 engine. Originally was created as a modification for Quake 3, but now is a standalone game. For more info you can visit the home page: http://www.urbanterror.info

  • How do I get the game?

Currently we use the 4.1 version of the game. You can get it from the links here: http://forum.tlws.org/index.php?page=urtdownloads

About TLWS

  • What does TLWS mean?

Nothing special, is just a name that reminds me of a building at my school.

  • Who are the TLWS admins?

  • How can I join the TLWS clan?

TLWS isn't a clan. But this project needs a name right? Ok, TLWS was a clan, when my friends and I played the game several years ago...
Then, there isn't a process to recruit people, and there isn't any event for the clan. In that sense, this isn't a clan. Some people do bear the [TLWS] tag because they are contributing heavily to this project.

About rankings/admin status in TLWS

  • Can I be an admin in the forum?

Well, at this moment the forum doesn't have many members so we don't need more admins. But ok, you can report spam posts or spam accounts to get deleted.

  • Can I be an admin in your servers?

This is an IMPORTANT question, and the answer is... it depends.

Many people come to ask if they can be admins, and think this is just a game. Based on previous experiences, most people asking for admin rights are kids that want to use the "god powers" to feel almighty and ban everyone in their path. Being an admin is a big responsibility.

To be an admin, we must trust you. How? Be a recurrent gamer, report cheaters here, and show us you are mature enough to assume the responsibility. This can take a little or a long time, at our discretion.

If you ask too much, you will NEVER be an admin.

  • I'm an admin in the servers, what are the rules? What can I do and what I can't?

Read the FAQ for admins in the following link:   http://forum.tlws.org/index.php?topic=369.0

    And the corresponding rules:  http://forum.tlws.org/admin-general/admin-rulesguidelines/

About the servers

  • What are all the TLWS servers?

Because this has been a long test of hosting companies, the servers will keep changing. If a server is found stable, that server will last long.

You can find the list in the next topic:     http://forum.tlws.org/index.php?topic=295.0

About the forum

  • What is the purpose of this forum?

Basically, we need to keep track of people using unfair tools known as cheats to get some advantages in the game. Here the people can report these kind of players so we can take actions about that.

  • Something in the forum/servers is failing! What can I do?

First, try to contact us via Private messages.

Well, if there isn't another contact form, like Private messages, then send an email to

    ipwn00bs -at- tlws.org

I will try to fix it as soon as possible.

About Demos and Cheaters

  • If I see a cheater, or a player looks suspicious, what should I do?

Come here and report the demo in the corresponding section. There are sections for every server. If a server doesn't have its own section, then submit it at the General Demo discusion

  • How can I identify a cheater?

    The most common cheats are:
-Wallhax: When a player can see thorough the walls, getting an advantage in the game:

-Aimbot: The most common. Is a cheat to enable automatic aim to the targets. Some aimbots go to the torso, anothers directly to the head.

-Radar: This cheat allows a player locate all the other players, not only the players in his team, but in the other team.

  • How to deal with asshats?
This is an special case of people. Sometimes a player gets annoying for others with a bad behavior, for example:
    - Spamming/radio spamming.
    - Insulting people.
    - Blocking doors.
    - Always looking for joining to the winning team.
    - Going to spec when they are about to die, etc.

In these situations, the suggestion is to take a demo of the situation and submit it in the corresponding section for the server where you were playing.
If the player has an aggressive behavior, avoid to confront him and just record the demo and upload it here.

Also, if applicable, you can take a "condump" of the dialog in-game (instructions below) and attach it.

  • How can I take a condump?
A condump or console dump, is an action to save the last lines of text generated by the game. This includes the kill messages, the chat dialog, the Bigbrotherbot messages, etc.
You can do it opening your console and writing:

    \condump file.txt

This will write a file called "file.txt" in the same folder where the UrT files are stored, or if you have a special build or in a Linux system, this will be stored inside of a ".q3a" folder.
Then you can submit this file like a demo file.

Note: Sometimes is hard to write the inverted slash (\). You can try to autocomplete your command with the TAB key. This will add the slash at the start of the line.

  • How can I open my console?
Generally, with the key at the left of the number one (1) in your keyboard.
Sometimes shift plus this key works.
This depends of your operative system.

  • How can I post a demo or attach a file?

    - Come here and open a new thread in the desired section.
    - Write your post.
    - Click in the plus sign "Additional Options..." in the left bottom corner of the text area.
    - In the section Attach, there is a button to explore your computer, locate your file.
    - Please include the timezone where you are, or post your clock at the time of posting.
    - Click on save, to publish your post and upload your file.
    - Suggestion: Follow the rules below to rename your demo file.
  • Are there any rules for uploading a demo?

Yes, the demos have names like this:

    2011_2_6_19_56_41_iPWNn00bs_ut4_abbey_TDM.dm_68

Also, don't use spaces in the name of the file, and don't use dots, excluding the one for the extension of the file.

Preferably try to name it as follows:

    2011_2_6_19_56_41_cheaternickname_ut4_abbey_TDM.dm_68

    Optionally:

    2011_2_6_19_56_41_cheaternickname_ut4_abbey_TDM_servername.dm_68

i.e. Replace your nick with the nick of the cheater and add the server name, like this example:

    2011_2_6_19_56_41_haxor_ut4_algiers_TDM_algiers.dm_68

That is a demo of a guy called "haxor" in our server algiers unlimited.

  • But, how to take a demo?

    - First, when you start playing, you see a screen to select your team: Auto-join, Red, Blue, and Spectate. This is important.
    - When you spot a cheater or suspect of someone, don't start accusing the player because that might scare him/her away (keep in mind we actually want to catch the cheater). Instead, press Esc, then click on the menu Player, then Team Select, finally click on Spectate.
    - Left click on your mouse until you can read below: "Following xxx", where xxx is the nickname of the suspicious player.
    - Press F12, some text will appear in the top of your screen: Rec: 2011_02_06 XXX KB The demo is being recorded.
    - Try to catch the best moments, specially when is clear to see how the guy is using a cheat.
    - To stop the recording, press F12 again.

    Notes:
    - If you have modified your configuration, so that F12 does no longer record, you need to open the in-game-console (by typing `'` or SHIFT+ESC) and start a demo with the command /recorddemo. After you have recorded the suspected Cheater, end the demo with /stoprecord (once again in the console).

  • Now I have the demo, how can I locate it for upload?

Assuming you have the normal client, these are the paths depending on your operating system:

    In Windows:
    C:\Program Files\Urban Terror\q3ut4\demos\

This depends on the folder where Urban Terror is installed.

    In Linux:
(Make sure you select the option to "Show Hidden Files and Folders")

    /home/user/.q3a/q3ut4/demos/

    In Mac:

     /Users/${loginName}/Library/Application Support/Quake3/q3ut4/demos/

where "${loginName}" is your "short" login name.

    Notes:
    - There is a bug in the Linux-Version, that stops you from watching your newly created demo. The Demo gets saved with an all-lowercase filename, but the game displays an all-uppercase filename. With Linux using a case-sensitive Filesystem, you get an 'File not found'-Error when trying to load that demo. The Fix is trivial: rename the File to be all-uppercase.

  • Someone uploaded a demo. How can I watch it?

Download it from the forum and depending of your Operative System, copy it to the corresponding folder (mentioned in the last question).

Then, start your game and click on the "Demos" button in the main screen. You must be able to see the demo file and load it.

    Note:
    - After you watch a demo, if you want to join to a server, probably you will get an error mentioning modified files. Just restart your game. This is a bug related in how some prohibited options are enabled when you watch demos.

About banned accounts

  • I was banned in the forum, what can I do?

If you feel the ban was a misunderstanding contact me in the mail above, or locate us in-game to study the case.

If you feel guilt or regrets, we are sorry... but there's nothing we can do about it.

  • I was banned in the server X, what can I do?

Same as above, but just post a thread in the corresponding server section and tell us your story.

About Big brother bot (B3)

The servers are being managed via Big Brother Bot, aka b3, a software written in Python to allow multiple users, rankings, statistics and build in a modular way, with custom plugins for any purpose.

You can take a look about it in  http://www.bigbrotherbot.net/

If you want to know more about b3 and the usage in our servers, take a look here:    Guide to b3 commands on TLWS servers (Thanks to FoxyDaddy for his effort writing it)

Also, another guide for administrators is here FAQ/Manual for Admins

In-game issues

If you have problems with something specific of the game, we have another thread for this questions:

http://forum.tlws.org/index.php?topic=514.0

If you have read until end, congratulations and welcome to TLWS!

PS: If there is an error or typo in the post, please tell me to fix it asap  ;)

Demos on the Mac are recorded to:

  /Users/${loginName}/Library/Application Support/Quake3/q3ut4/demos/

where "${loginName}" is your "short" login name.

Greetings,

i have 2 suggestions to make:

in the section 'But, how to take a demo?', something along these lines could be added:

If you have fucked fiddled with your config, so that F12 does no longer record, you need to open the in-game-console (by typing `` or SHIFT+ESC) and start a demo with the command /recorddemo. After you have recorded the suspected Cheater, end the demo with /stoprecord (once again in the console).

in the section 'Now I have the demo, how can I locate it for upload?' (or somewhere around there), I think it should be mentioned, that there is a bug in the Linux-Version, that stops you from watching your newly created demo. The Demo gets saved with an all-lowercase filename, but UrT displays an all-uppercase filename. With Linux using a case-sensitive Filesystem, you get an 'File not found'-Error when trying to load that demo. The Fix is trivial: rename the File to be all-uppercase.

I know that all/most of you already know all of the above, but probably not the typical F.A.Q. Reader...

Thanks for your Consideration.
