Title: FAQ - Frequently asked questions
Post by: iPWN on January 30, 2011, 01:26:18 am
Ok, some people ask the same questions every time :P

I think it will be nice to get a FAQ for the forum, and answer other questions more specific.

If you have suggestions, corrections, and new topics to add, please let us know by replying to this post.

Let's start:

About Urban Terror

About TLWS

About rankings/admin status in TLWS

About the servers

About the forum

About Demos and Cheaters

About banned accounts

About Big brother bot (B3)

The servers are being managed via Big Brother Bot, aka b3, a software written in Python to allow multiple users, rankings, statistics and build in a modular way, with custom plugins for any purpose.

You can take a look about it in  http://www.bigbrotherbot.net/ (http://www.bigbrotherbot.net/)

If you want to know more about b3 and the usage in our servers, take a look here:    Guide to b3 commands on TLWS servers (http://forum.tlws.org/index.php?topic=450.0) (Thanks to FoxyDaddy for his effort writing it)

Also, another guide for administrators is here FAQ/Manual for Admins (http://forum.tlws.org/index.php?topic=369.0)

In-game issues

If you have problems with something specific of the game, we have another thread for this questions:

http://forum.tlws.org/index.php?topic=514.0 (http://forum.tlws.org/index.php?topic=514.0)

If you have read until end, congratulations and welcome to TLWS!

PS: If there is an error or typo in the post, please tell me to fix it asap  ;)

Demos on the Mac are recorded to:

  /Users/${loginName}/Library/Application Support/Quake3/q3ut4/demos/

where "${loginName}" is your "short" login name.

Title: Re: FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Greetings,

i have 2 suggestions to make:

in the section 'But, how to take a demo?', something along these lines could be added:

If you have fucked fiddled with your config, so that F12 does no longer record, you need to open the in-game-console (by typing `` or SHIFT+ESC) and start a demo with the command /recorddemo. After you have recorded the suspected Cheater, end the demo with /stoprecord (once again in the console).

in the section 'Now I have the demo, how can I locate it for upload?' (or somewhere around there), I think it should be mentioned, that there is a bug in the Linux-Version, that stops you from watching your newly created demo. The Demo gets saved with an all-lowercase filename, but UrT displays an all-uppercase filename. With Linux using a case-sensitive Filesystem, you get an 'File not found'-Error when trying to load that demo. The Fix is trivial: rename the File to be all-uppercase.

I know that all/most of you already know all of the above, but probably not the typical F.A.Q. Reader...

Thanks for your Consideration.

a simple question just to clear it for once and for all:

how are the servers dealing with Spectator-chat?
'cause on Germany, I think the only time you can read what ppl in spec write while being blue or red is at the end of the round, but I'm not completely sure about it, and I get very confused on the other servers how it's working
Title: Re: FAQ - Frequently asked questions
Post by: Mav on April 30, 2012, 01:19:12 pm
I haven't seen players being able to read spectator chat on a tdm/ctf server. I have, however, seen player-visible spectator chat on some TS servers, but only when one is dead. That may just be a bug, but I don't know the semantics behind chat.
Title: Re: FAQ - Frequently asked questions
Post by: ubernoob on April 30, 2012, 01:25:17 pm
on germany you can definitly read the spec-chat at the end of the round when the scores are shown

My experience is that spec chat is always invisible during play, but always visible at the end of the round.  There are of course rcon and b3 options for speaking from console while in spec.

I have limited experience with TS and Bomb mode.  They allow you to spectate while dead, but you are still assigned to a team and thus are still able to chat.  Dead chat can be disabled in the server settings, I believe, but I have never seen it (what else are you going to do when you die in that initial TS rush?).

From:

• set g_deadchat "1" // Determines if alive players can see dead players message. 0=living players can not see dead players chat 1=living players see only team-messages from dead teammembers 2=living players also see normal chats from dead players. (Default 1)

From what I read, the original urt code does not allow that (maybe I didn't search properly?), but urt servers with custom binaries have a variable (sv_specChatGlobal) to enable broadcasting spec chat to players. Though only ipwn can verify if this is the case.

Yes, is as Rex says. Invisible until the end of the round. Is the default behavior, and IMHO is ok like that.
Anyway, IIRC I have the binary patched to enable spec chat broadcast if required one day :P

Interesting, thanks.  Seems like it would be incovenient, though, when discussing a suspicious player with someone else while in spec.

i.e. Replace your nick with the nick of the cheater and add the server name, like this example:

2011_2_6_19_56_41_haxor_ut4_abbey_TDM_algiers.dm_68

That is a demo of a guy called "haxor" in our server algiers unlimited.

uhh maybe change the map name to algiers and not abbey .....doesent really matter but i was a bit like... 'UUHH??'
(theres no abbey on the algiers unlimited server) hint hint :s

Quick script to uppercase demos on Linux (unless you like manual labour):
Code: [Select]
#!/bin/bash
#
# urt_log2html.sh
# FamillyEntertainer 2010-12-07
# copyright Slappable Software
# You have the right to use this file to make fun of it or whatever i guess
#
# -- Renames Urban Terror demos to uppercase --
#
# (seems like it contains bashisms, like "dirname $0" ? i dunno)

## Change to the script's directory
# So that the '.' (dot = current) directory refers to the scripts directory
# Bad idea?
cd `dirname $0`

## Parameters
# The directory we're gonna work in
#workdir=./dummydir
workdir=$HOME/.q3ut4/q3ut4/demos
# workdir=.
# The extension of demo files (.dm_68 , pretty much)
demoext=.dm_68

# Uppercase version of the extension
upext=`echo $demoext | tr [:lower:] [:upper:]`

for filename in ${workdir}/*${demoext}
do
    ## For each entry of the directory that has the correct extension
    # (Includes directories named "blabladir.dm_68")
    if [ -f $filename ]
    then
        ## It's a file
        # So we start the renaming

        # Uppercase version of the file name (with uppercase extension)
        uppername=`basename $filename | tr [:lower:] [:upper:]`
        # Add file path, and put extension to lower case
        newname=${workdir}/${uppername/%$upext/$demoext}
        if [ ! -f $newname ]
        then
            ## The file doesn't have the proper case (formatting)
            ## RENAME
            mv $filename $newname && echo $filename "was renamed to" $newname
        else
            ## The file has already been renamed. Or there is a problem
            # We DON'T rename.
            echo '"'$newname'"' "already exists with proper formatting."
        fi

A suggestion:
Could you add in the

area that when renaming the demo, ppl should NOT put spaces ( ) or more then one dot (.) in a row into the filename, 'cause with these in it you can't open the demo
Title: Re: FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Added that with a slight modification. There is no need to have any dots in the filename :P

Have fun
