Good old times
« on: May 31, 2013, 06:21:27 am »
Where has everyone gone nowadays?? I remember the days when I would connect to a TLWS server and there would be at least one regular playing at any one time. Recently I'm lucky if I spot one a day! I miss the fun hours chatting away while fragging the opposition  :'( I meet Supot, SMILEY and Dec in-game sometimes but I can't say the same for you others (Mav, Dura, Reika, Bug, Ubernoob, Coco, Keith - although I saw he was on Dressingroom yesterday, Leaf, Rex - both Rexgoodthings and Rex bones, SMG and any other regulars I may have missed). UrT's just not the same without you guys!

I still play almost daily.  I stop by Urt Nights LA, but it is usually empty.  Anyway, I mostly prefer CTF these days.  Maybe Nights LA will pick up again, who knows.

Of course 4.2 could change everything, assuming people really start playing it.  And then Urt HD might change everything again, assuming it is released within our lifetimes.

I  wouldn't have high hopes for them releasing HD and 4.2 anytime soon. Their work rate has fallen a lot in the last couple of years.

When it's not empty, there might be a couple of average players but no-one challenging. It's a shame that the slots don't fill up like they used to, LA Nights is my favourite server.

True, I often see a couple of beginners there.  Rarely more than two or three.  That's not a bad thing, but it would be nice to see more regulars.

I  wouldn't have high hopes for them releasing HD and 4.2 anytime soon. Their work rate has fallen a lot in the last couple of years.

I just checked.  4.2 seems to be the only release officially available now.  It's not listed as beta on the download page, but on the forums there are complaints that 4.2 servers are empty and it seems that each update brings noticeable changes (implying that it is not yet stable).

I may have to try 4.2 soon.

There's still some bug fixes and stuff to be done on 4.2 until its properly ready for use. 4.2 only has like 3 servers right now apparently with limited match modes which is why some people are against it. There's nothing wrong in having a change though and helping out the lazy developers by finding glitches  8)

I've been  busy with work with little time for gaming; maybe a  couple of hours a week. That said, I may pop by this weekend, provided I see someone playing.

Didn't forget you  :P The bots go on a holiday together when everyone in the server leaves.

I may have to try 4.2 soon.

So I tried it.

The good:

Hits seem improved.  The Auth system is probably a step in the right direction as far as anti-hack measures (seeing as there weren't any to speak of previously).

The bad:
Most UrT servers are empty nowadays. :/
This is true for 4.1, and even truer for 4.2.

The ugly:

I hate to criticize groups/individuals who work thanklessly on a free game, but I don't think what I have to say is news to anyone.  The animations and player models are bad.  I literally laugh out loud sometimes.  When opponents do the old LR shuffle, moving side to side, their upper bodies seem unwilling dance partners to their lower limbs.  There are some complaints that the animations affect gameplay (aiming at unpredictable targets and such).  And on the official forums, the Frozen Sand team seems unwilling to admit there are any significant problems.

There is probably a reason people aren't moving to 4.2.  I mean beyond inertia.  If 4.2 was really an improvement, wouldn't it be more populated?  I'm not optimistic about Urt's future.

4.2  is still being "developed" so I guess it's not ready for full function. But I do think that before releasing even a beta test version, the basics should be completed which hasn't been done from your experiences of movement. I'll try it sometime too if I manage to download it. Are the 4.1 bugs fixed e.g. pressing reload but then switching to seondary stopping the reload animation? How many servers are there for 4.2?

Yes.  I've read that in the past people have wrongly predicted Urt's death, so I don't want to write that here.  It is possible it will bounce back in popularity.  They wrote on their forum that there are 500 players even at downtimes, and 1000 at peak times, not including bots.  So there is still hope, I guess.  But they seem kind of focused on their 'HD' version being a big improvement to the game.  I'm skeptical.

4.2  is still being "developed" so I guess it's not ready for full function. From the readme file:
Quote
- weapon reloading/switching bug fixed

I believe that and other bugs have been fixed.  There are complaints of new bugs being created.  As far as the 'basics' not being completed, I don't get that impression.  I'm sure it's being actively developed, but I've seen no mention that the animations are going to be completely overhauled for 4.2.  And the next Urban Zone League comp is set to use 4.2.  And 4.2 is the only official download, so they seem to think it is close to being finalized.

There are a decent number of servers, but they are mostly empty.  Canadian Carnage has a TDM server that is almost always well populated, and I'm sure there are a few others that are consistently playable.  But not as many as 4.1.

Algiers Unlimited was my the most favourite server ever but now there is no players so i sometimes playing on TLWS Germany server. True is that i don´t have much time to play like others.

to Anavel: It was gold times :) .
